How to Read a Sports Science Study

A short reading workflow for moving from an abstract to a decision without overstating the evidence.

Start with the population

Healthy adults, trained athletes, injured participants and mixed samples do not answer the same question. Write the sample beside the finding.

Then inspect the comparison

Ask what the intervention was compared with, how long it lasted and which outcome was measured. A statistically visible result may still be too small or too uncertain for a practical change.

Finish with the limits

Look for measurement choices, missing data, conflicts, generalisability and the difference between association and cause. A good conclusion often includes a boundary.

Read the question before the conclusion

Start with the population, intervention or exposure, comparison and outcome. Trained adults, youth athletes, patients and recreational participants do not answer the same practical question. Note the duration and the task before reading the headline result. Then inspect how the outcome was measured. A statistically significant change in a laboratory measure may not be a meaningful change in competition, while a modest field effect may still matter when the decision is low cost and reversible.

Move from paper to practice carefully

After the abstract, read the methods for allocation, compliance, warm-up, device, training background and missing data. In the results, look for uncertainty, individual spread and whether the comparison matches the claim. Finally, write one sentence for what the study supports and one for what it does not. For example, a study may support a short-term change in a trained sample under a defined protocol, but not a universal prescription for every sport.

Errors that make evidence sound stronger

Do not confuse association with cause, a proxy with a performance outcome or a statistically significant result with a worthwhile change. A review can inherit the limitations of its included studies. A single primary study can be informative without settling the question. Check conflicts, funding, sample size and generalisability, then compare with the relevant protocol page. Make a one-page extraction before writing the summary

Use five lines: question, sample, comparison, outcome and main limitation. Add the setting, duration and whether the outcome was a laboratory proxy or a meaningful performance result. Then write what would have to be true for the finding to apply to your athlete or programme. If several conditions are missing, the correct translation may be a small experiment with careful monitoring rather than a prescription. This approach also prevents citation decoration. A source earns space because it changes what the reader understands, not because its title sounds authoritative.

Keep translation reversible

When the evidence is indirect or uncertain, turn it into a small monitored trial rather than a permanent rule. State what would count as a useful response and what would make you stop. That is a better bridge from paper to practice.

A careful conclusion can be useful

The final summary should tell the reader the population, the intervention or exposure, the outcome, the practical meaning and the main uncertainty. If one of those is unknown, say so. Readers can act on a bounded conclusion; they cannot safely act on confidence that the study did not earn.
