The landing is a task
Height, approach, intent, surface and fatigue change how a landing looks. A low box landing and a maximal sport jump are not the same test.
Describe before judging
Note foot placement, trunk motion, knee and hip motion, balance recovery and the timing of the next action. Video can support a conversation, but camera angle and frame rate shape what is visible.

A landing observation matters when it connects to the athlete's actual demand. Avoid calling a single frame safe or unsafe without a broader assessment.
Film the task, not a fantasy of the task
Write down the height, approach, intent, surface, footwear, fatigue state and what happens after the landing. A drop from a low box, a maximal rebound and a sport-specific jump are separate tasks. Place the camera where the relevant motion is visible, keep the frame rate and distance consistent and avoid pretending that one two-dimensional view shows every joint load. Give the athlete clear instructions and enough rehearsal that the observation is about the task rather than confusion.
Describe the sequence
Watch the approach, first contact, trunk response, hip and knee motion, foot pressure, balance recovery and the next action. A landing that looks different may be an intentional strategy for a different goal. Compare repeated trials before calling it a pattern. If the athlete changes when the task becomes single-leg, fatigued or reactive, that difference creates a useful coaching question. The observation should lead to a progression or a referral, not a dramatic label.
Limits of visual judgement
A camera angle can hide frontal-plane motion, timing and force. A quiet landing may still involve a high demand, while a visible bend may be an effective strategy. Never call one frame safe, unsafe or predictive of injury. Link the observation to the sport and the athlete's symptoms, history and training exposure. If pain, instability, swelling or neurological signs are present, stop the performance experiment and seek qualified assessment. Use observation to guide progression
If a landing is inconsistent, reduce the task until the athlete can repeat the basic strategy without pain or fear. That might mean less height, more time to organise, a two-leg landing, a stick before rebound or a simpler direction. Then change one demand and film again under the same angle. The goal is not to force a visually perfect shape. It is to see whether the athlete can manage the relevant task and recover balance for the next action. Record confidence, symptoms and fatigue as well as joint positions. A visual improvement without better task control or comfort is not enough evidence to progress.
Respect adaptation speed
A new landing strategy may require repeated exposure before it becomes automatic, especially under fatigue or sport pressure. Progress gradually, reassess the actual task and avoid declaring success from one attractive frame.
Recheck under the real demand
A controlled drill may look different from a late-game landing, a reactive jump or a landing after sprinting. Once the basic task is comfortable and repeatable, reassess the relevant sport demand without claiming that the drill predicted it. Context is the bridge between a useful observation and an overconfident label.
